But I'm no good at art…

Creativity; the use of imagination or original ideas to create something, is a basic human instinct and form of communication. We have evidence of that from cave drawings date back as far as 64,000 years ago!

Tapping into your creative energy provides you with moments of complete joy and the satisfaction of making something unique.

It's not all about art, you can be creative in a million different ways; from making the world's next baking masterpiece, to expressively dancing around your living room! However, to get long term benefits, it must challenge you and stretch you in new ways.

First of all you need to make time and space to allow for creativity. Make it a priority. Oftentimes, major events or stressors can take up your time and headspace. Start by considering whether your energy would be better spent directing it towards something constructive rather than destructive.

But why be creative?

Here's a few reasons to make creativity a part of your life:

  1. Creativity helps you to see the world differently

Creativity sparks inspiration and new ideas. You will start to acknowledge new colours, shapes and sounds; as if you're seeing the world for the first time. To be able to communicate through creativity we have to form connections and Join the dots and get your message across to the world. It promotes visualisation and enhances your imagination.

  2. Creativity helps you to develop your confidence and character

It allows you to trust your intuition, improve your decision making and work on your problem solving. Once you get past the first few steps and the skill starts to feel a little easier, your confidence will begin to grow. This confidence can then overflow into other areas of your life and you'll notice that you start accepting new opportunities.

  3. Creativity helps you to be present

It encourages us to be engaged in the moment and it makes us focus singularly on one thing. Creativity is perfect for when you have a million things whizzing around your head. It quietens the mind and allows you to focus your attention on one thing. I found this when I felt that I was spiralling down into a pit of anger and resentment. The only thing that would bring me clarity was watercolours and line drawing. I would just sit down, pick up my Pigma Micron finalisers, watercolour pad and paints and finally surface 3 hours later!

  4. Creativity allows for expression of ourselves

Be it artwork, dance, music or gardening. Creativity allows for us to construct something unique and communicate by awakening all of our senses. This deepening connection to yourself will help you to express your emotions and, in turn, enhance your relationships with others. It increases your capacity to love, both others and yourself.

  5. Creativity is carefree

As a child you wouldn't question failure, you'd go for it, fall down and get back up. That childhood vulnerability and innocence comes forward when learning a new skill. Take the first few steps and have fun whilst doing it.

  6. Creativity opens new opportunities

Consistency pays off in leanring a new skill. You may find that you're actually very good and it could open many doors in the form of inspiring other people or being paid for your new hobby.

  7. Creativity gives you a sense of pride

You're taught from a young age not to ‘blow your own trumpet’ and it's not something that comes naturally to us. This means there are very few occasions when you get to feel true pride. There is nothing better than stepping back and admiring your work. Experiencing a sense of pride is great, sharing it with friends is even better. Let them congratulate you and share in your enthusiasm. Share your work in the Facebook group with the hashtag #mycreativepower

  8. Creativity leads to freedom

Do it because you enjoy it. Remove the pressure of expectation and just see what happens. There is no right or wrong. Creativity is a journey with lots of ups and downs; it's about learning to trust the process.

  9. Creativity allows you to unplug.

Unfortunately the media thrives on blame, shock and scandal. It'd be easy to think that's all that's going on in the world! We're so used to instant gratification and reduced attention spans. Creativity takes time and that teaches us that there is reward if we wait.

  10. Creativity is good for your health

It reduces anxiety, decreases stress, lowers heart rate and increases happiness by releasing the feel-good hormones. You will gain headspace in doing something just for you. It's good for you, give yourself the gift of creativity.

I'd love to see your creations! Post a picture in the Facebook group with the hashtag #mycreativepower and show us how amazing you are!
